Adding Expenses

Log every outgoing payment so your budget, analytics, and net worth stay accurate.

1. Opening the Expense Form

  • Desktop: Click Add in the top navbar, then select Add Expense.
  • Mobile: Tap the + button in the bottom tab bar, then tap Add Expense from the sheet that appears.

You can also use the + Add shortcut next to Expenses in the sidebar on desktop.

2. Using Quick Add

The top of the expense form has a Quick Add text box. Type a plain description such as "swiggy 320" and tap Go. The app will auto-fill the amount and suggest a category, which you can confirm or change before saving.

This is the fastest way to log an expense when you are in a hurry.

3. Filling the Form Manually

If you prefer to fill in the form yourself, complete the following fields:

  1. Amount (required): The rupee amount you spent.
  2. Category (required): The spending category, such as Food, Transport, or Bills.
  3. Description (optional): A short note about what you spent on.
  4. Account (required): The account the money came from.
  5. Date: Defaults to today. Tap More options to change it.
  6. Payment Method: Tap one of Cash, Credit Card, Debit Card, UPI, or NetBanking.

Click Save when you are done.

4. Where the Expense Appears

After saving, the expense appears in several places at once:

  • The Expenses list at /expenses/
  • The Transactions list at /transactions/
  • The Dashboard Spent tile for the current period
  • The Budget bar for the category you selected

5. Editing or Deleting an Expense

Find the expense in the Expenses list and click or tap the row to open it. Use the edit icon to open the form and change any field. Click Save to apply the changes.

To delete, use the delete (trash) icon on the expense detail screen. A confirmation prompt will appear before the record is removed.

Real-world use case

After a Swiggy delivery arrives, Meera logs it in under 15 seconds: she taps the + button, selects Add Expense, enters 450 as the amount, picks Dining Out as the category, selects HDFC Savings as the account, taps UPI as the payment method, and hits Save. She immediately sees her Dining Out budget bar move forward on the Dashboard, which reminds her how close she is to her monthly limit.
